CASE STUDY

Case Study: NHVR Maps — National Spatial Programme

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) needed a single national mapping platform to serve Australia’s vast heavy vehicle network — one of the largest and most complex in the world.

The Challenge Road managers across 750 local and state authorities were managing nearly one million kilometres of roads using outdated, manual processes (primarily PDF forms and email). This created massive inefficiencies, data inconsistencies, delays, and safety risks. There was no unified real-time view for managing heavy vehicle networks, restrictions, detours, weather, or incidents.

Gattaca’s Work We led the end-to-end user experience design for NHVR Maps. Through remote workshops and interviews with 27 Road Managers across urban, regional, and rural environments, we mapped current pain points and designed optimised user journeys.

We created a scalable, real-time spatial solution that empowered Road Managers with self-service tools to dynamically update road networks, define boundaries, layer live data (weather, bushfires, CCTV, detours), and manage heavy vehicle access with confidence.

The Outcome Delivered a modern, intelligent national spatial web app that transformed how Australia manages its heavy vehicle infrastructure. Road Managers now have real-time visibility and control, significantly reducing manual administration, improving data accuracy, and enhancing network safety and efficiency.
